Sample IELTS Speaking 2 Questions and Topics

In this post is a helpful list of sample IELTS Speaking 2 questions and topics for the IELTS Interview. These questions and topics will help you prepare for any question they may ask you in Part 2 the IELTS Speaking test. Prepare for the IELTS Speaking questions by practicing answering these questions before your IELTS test day.

Format of Part 2 of IELTS Speaking Test

In Part 2 of the IELTS Speaking Test, you will be given a piece of paper that asks you to talk about 1 Topic. This Topic will have 4-parts listed under it of information that it would like you to focus on in your talk. The IELTS Examiner gives you 1 minute to prepare your response, after which you will need to talk for 2 minutes. After you finish talking, the IELTS Examiner may ask 1 or 2 follow-up questions related to the Topic.

How to use this list of IELTS Speaking Part 2 Topics

Think of what you would say about each of the topics below.

  • Create your own vocabulary list of interesting words or phrases for each of your answers
  • Think of stories you could tell about each of your answers
  • Think about reasons why did you picked these answers so that you can explain your choice
  • Practice (and record yourself) giving short 2-3 minutes speeches about each of the topics below

Sample IELTS Speaking Part 2 Question Topics

There are a few major categories for IELTS Speaking Part 2 questions:

  • Describe an object (such as a gift or something you use)
  • Describe a person (such as someone you admire or a family member)
  • Describe an event (such as a festival or a party)
  • Describe difficult thing (such as a job or decision)
  • Describe an activity (such as a hobby or school project)
  • Describe a favorite thing (such as a book or website)
  • Describe a place (such as somewhere you visited or an interesting place in your country)
  • Describe a something you have learned about (such as a school subject or law)

However, on test day, they will likely ask a much more specific topic, such as one topics below.

Describe an object

(such as a gift or something you use)

  • An important/Meaningful personal object
  • A gift you have received that you like
  • An electronic device you often use
  • What you would buy if you had a lot of money
  • An important photograph that you have

Describe a person

(such as someone you admire or a family member)

  • A famous person you admire
  • A family member you admire
  • A person you would like to meet
  • Someone who has influenced you
  • A favorite teacher or boss

Describe an event

(such as a festival or a party)

  • An important national historical event
  • An interesting national festival
  • A happy event in your life
  • An enjoyable family celebration
  • A project or report you did in school or at work

Describe an activity

(such as a hobby or school project)

  • An enjoyable hobby or pastime you do
  • What you did with friends when young
  • What you do or used to do for exercise
  • A musical instrument you would like to play
  • An important change you have made in your life

Describe a place

(such as somewhere you visited or an interesting place in your country)

  • An interesting city in your home country
  • An interesting landmark you have been to
  • A favorite place to shop
  • An interesting place you want to go to
  • An interesting trip you have taken

Describe a favorite thing

(such as a book or website)

  • An interesting book you have read
  • An enjoyable movie you’ve seen
  • An interesting art you have seen
  • An interesting music you have heard
  • An interesting company
  • A favorite restaurant

Describe something that was difficult

(such as a job or decision)

  • A difficult job or responsibility you have had
  • A time where someone helped you
  • A difficult decision you had to make
  • An illness or injury you or someone suffered from
  • A societal problem your country faces

Describe something you have learned about

(such as a school subject or law)

  • An interesting law in your country
  • An interesting topic you want to study
  • An interesting recent news article
  • A major industry in your country
  • The transportation system in your hometown

NOTE: The IELTS is always adding new questions to Part 2 of the IELTS Speaking test. However, if you prepare vocabulary lists and stories for Part 2 of the IELTS Speaking test using the topics above, you will likely be ready for almost any question they ask you!
